HP Laptop Screen Flickering During Google Meet, WhatsApp or Voice Recorder? Here's How I Fixed It

I expected a routine video call, but instead my HP Laptop 15s-fr2511TU with Windows 11 OS started flickering every time I opened Google Meet, WhatsApp Desktop, Windows Voice Recorder, or even the Sound settings. At first it looked like a graphics problem, but after a systematic investigation I discovered that the real trigger was Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST). This article shares the symptoms, the failed solutions, the breakthrough, and the workaround that finally solved the issue.

The Symptoms

The display flickered only when Windows initialized the audio subsystem. The laptop worked normally during everyday tasks, but the moment an application tried to access the microphone, the entire screen became unstable.

The Troubleshooting Journey

I started with the obvious fixes with the help of Google Search, ChatGPT, Grok AI, and Gemini. This HP Support link appeared helpful so I tried almost all the solutions it provided. Eventually, the page did not appear that helpful for me. But it did give a crucial clue that the issue lies in the Audio driver instead of the Graphics driver, which I thought initially.

I updated the BIOS, Intel Chipset drivers, Intel MEI, and the official HP Realtek audio package through the official HP Software and Drivers page. None of these updates solved the problem. I also checked the Intel UHD Graphics driver because the symptom appeared on the display, but nothing indicated a graphics failure.

The first breakthrough came when I disabled Intel Smart Sound Technology for Digital Microphones. The flickering stopped immediately. To verify the finding, I removed the complete Intel SST stack. After rebooting, Windows no longer detected the audio devices and, more importantly, the screen remained perfectly stable.

When I reconnected to the internet and Windows automatically reinstalled the Intel audio driver, the screen started flickering again as soon as the driver initialized. That repeatable behavior confirmed that Intel SST—not the display hardware—was the trigger.

The Solution That Worked

Instead of trying to repair Intel SST, I bypassed it. In Device Manager (Devices by Connection), I located the Intel Smart Sound Technology BUS and manually replaced its driver with Microsoft's built-in High Definition Audio Controller.

Once the Intel SST BUS was no longer using Intel's driver, the display became completely stable. The only trade-off was losing the built-in digital microphone. However, using a standard 3.5 mm headset restored voice calls and recordings without any display flickering.

How to Perform the Replacement

To switch from the Intel SST hierarchy to the generic Microsoft controller to resolve audio errors or system freezes, I followed these steps:

1. Press Windows+X and and click Device Manager to open

2. Look for the below path
3. Here is the detailed path

4. Right-click the Intel Smart Sound Technology BUS under system devices.
In your system, you may find Intel(R) SST Audio Controller under System devices.

5. Select Update driver -> Browse my computer for drivers.
6. Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
7. Uncheck Show compatible hardware if needed
8. Select Microsoft as the manufacturer on the left panel
9. Select High Definition Audio Controller from the right panel.
10. Click Next, ignore the warning prompt by clicking Yes, and restart your computer.

Why Did it Happen?

Although HP and Intel have not officially documented this exact issue, the investigation revealed a consistent pattern. Every time Intel Smart Sound Technology woke the audio subsystem from a low-power state, the display began flickering. Replacing the Intel SST BUS driver bypassed that software layer, preventing the conflict and restoring display stability. In short, the screen itself was not faulty—the Intel SST driver path was the real trigger. This might have happened due to a recent app installed or possibly due to an incomplete window update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why did my HP laptop flicker only during calls?
A. Because applications that use the microphone also initialize the Intel SST audio subsystem.

Q. Is the display panel faulty?
A. In my case, no. The panel worked perfectly once Intel SST was bypassed.

Q. Does this fix affect audio?
A. The built-in digital microphone no longer works, but a 3.5 mm headset functions normally. A USB headphone also worked fine.

Q. Should everyone replace the Intel SST BUS driver?
A. No. This workaround is appropriate only if your symptoms closely match those described here and standard updates have failed.

Final Thoughts

This experience reinforced the importance of diagnosing a problem methodically instead of assuming the most obvious cause. Hours of testing eventually revealed that the issue wasn't the display at all—it was an interaction involving Intel Smart Sound Technology. If your HP laptop shows the same symptoms, this documented workaround may save you from unnecessary repairs or even replacing a perfectly good screen.
