Priceless Gems from the Ad-Mad world of Indian Television

You are surely going to love this because this is different, perhaps way different than the league of the extraordinary articles this blog is in the habit to come up with. Jokes apart, on the occasion of 63rd Republic day, this is my attempt to go to a journey down the memory lane and recall those mesmerizing jingles that once used to be no less than a nationwide rage.

The Nostalgia!

Yes, you guessed it right, am talking about the scintillating TV ads that that compelled all of us to sway and dance to their magical tunes in our childhood. In those times, when television was the only source of entertainment in the Indian households with Doordarshan as the sole channel being played on it, TV commercials attracted the attention of all and sundry.

Since then, the world has only become a better place to live in and has enabled us witness zillions of interactive ad campaigns with their own mass appeal and fan following. However, justifying the universal truth “Old is Gold”, those ads of 80’s and 90’s still hold a soft corner somewhere or the other deep within our heart. Let us recreate the magic with those spell binding commercials.

Hamara Bajaj

The ad with the encouraging lines “Buland bharat ki buland tasveer” is hitherto among the most lauded ones due to its connectivity with the common man. Those were the times when Bajaj scooters used to get the same treatment as we give to a Honda City nowadays or for that reason, to any other contemporary four wheeler. This advertisement not only inspired millions of Indians to buy those scooters accompanying larger than life image, but also promoted national integrity at its best. Kudos to the entire creative team behind it!

The Classic Cadbury Ad

The beautiful lady in this “Kuch khaas hai hum sabhi mein”ad would have definitely motivated the IPL cheer leaders whom we enjoy even more than Cricket, in Cricket nowadays. The way this damsel maneuvered her way to the field, the entire nation was tossed away for a six just like the one being hit by the smart gentleman. To my mind, this commercial rekindled the love of nation for 2 Cs, Cricket and chocolates. So next time you watch Pathan or Kohli hitting a six, I hope you won’t mind celebrating the shot with Cadbury bite. After all, it is the one that gave you “Asli swad Zindagi ka”.

Yehi Hai Right Choice baby….Aha!

Pepsi was a new entrant to the Indian beverages market in the early 90’s. In order to compete with the existing brands, it really needed a kick ass start; the “Yehi Hai Right Choice baby….Aha! ad campaign did the trick and the rest is history. The commercial kept on getting fresh air with the crème de la crème of the nation playing a cameo in the ad now and then;, prominent of them being  Remo Fernandez, Sachin Tendulkar, Shah Rukh Khan, Kapil Dev and many more.

The brand still exists, the slogan however kept on changing with the time such as “Ye dil maange more” (Famous for its use by Param Vir Chakra recipient Capt. Vikram Batra, during the 1999 Kargil War), “Change the game”  campaign (during World Cup cricket 2011), and so on.

Amul-The Taste of India

With the emotionally engaging starting lines, “Zara si hasi dulaar zara sa”, Amul created an everlasting bond between itself and the innumerable households spanning across the length and breadth of the nation, irrespective of cast, creed or religion. An innovative effort from people with a creative bend of mind, this ad for sure became the Ad of India right from the time it was unearthed on the Indian televisions. Amul is no doubt a household name even today amidst all the stiff competition from new entrants in the industry. However, it has been the driving force behind the white revolution in India, and through this ad it touched the hearts of millions all across the nation. Definitely, it is still the taste of India and last but not the least, how can you forget that ‘Amul Baby’, symbolizing the healthy child of India.

The Bottom line

The story does not end here; there are many more exceptional advertisement campaigns that I ceased to discuss in this post due to dearth of space. All these commercials indeed put up for a lively show ever since the Television mania turned its head towards our country in the early 80’s in the form of Doordarshan. The fact that these ads were the first to embellish those TV screens made them the trend setters and be remembered till now. If you remember any other popular ad representing those old good times, make sure to share it on this space and let others travel in those golden moments, full of purity, innocence, and leisure.
